The Metropolitan Museum of Art, through Oct 17th, houses the nostalgic street photographs of the lesser known midcentury photographer Leon Levinstein. Levinstein’s photographs are raw and gritty and exemplify a time when New York City was the center of the international art scene. His subjects are often mundane and odd, focusing on people’s overflowing midsections and the grotesque. The exhibition highlights a nostalgic time for New York, pre-gentrification and post glamour where the inhabitants were fierce and wild and made the city the concrete jungle that she is today.
